An Overview A Custodian in the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities performs routine manual tasks involving the custodial care and cleaning of public buildings and facilities. The work includes performing general cleaning and minor maintenance tasks. Using Green Seal Standards custodians primary responsibilities are to use proper methods, materials and equipment in cleaning and attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings and/or equipment. An employee in this class works under close supervision of the Building Services Coordinator and in concert with facility managers to ensure our facilities are clean, safe and welcoming for use by the general public.

Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of surfaces; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to operate powered automatic scrubbers and sweepers as required; ability to work safely without hazard to self and/or others; and sufficient physical strength to withstand the strain of working long hours in performing cleaning work.
The Opportunity
- Cleans, sanitizes and deodorizes restrooms and replenishes supplies;
- Dusts and cleans offices, and polishes furniture;
- Empties waste cans and ash trays;
- Helps move office and building furniture and equipment, and prepares rooms for meetings;
- Maintains and clears immediate outdoor areas and sidewalks from debris and snow;
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs;
- Provide exceptional customer experiences, interactions and services for customers and fellow employees;
- Reports damaged fixtures, supply needs, more difficult and major repairs;
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, buffs, and waxes floors;
- Washes windows, walls and mirrors;
- Performs related work as required.
About the Department The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities and programming. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.
High School Diploma or GED; some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of surfaces; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to operate powered automatic scrubbers, buffers, and sweepers as required; ability to work safely without hazard to self and/or others; and sufficient physical strength to withstand the strain of working long hours in performing cleaning work. Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.
