Position Description:
The Maintenance/Custodian is responsible for all cleaning and maintenance of the senior center building. The position is performed under the direct supervision of the Executive Director.
Daily Duties and Responsibilities
- Keeps building and property in clean and orderly condition
- Performs routine maintenance activities
- Performs heavy cleaning duties
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs and/or vacuums floors
- Cleans and sanitizes kitchen floors, counters and equipment.
- Empty grease dispenser in kitchen and clean regularly.
- Fills steam table with water for kitchen volunteers when needed.
- Cleans and sanitizes inside steam table.
- Cleans and sanitizes staff kitchen floors, counters and appliances.
- Gathers and empties trash
- Scrubs, sanitizes, and supplies restroom facilities
- Dusts furniture, walls, and equipment
- Cleans windows, mirrors, and partitions with soap and other cleansers
- Mixes cleaning solutions and chemicals in containers in preparation for cleaning, according to instructions.
- Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
- Cleans and polishes fixtures and furniture throughout the building
- General cleanup of any and all incidents as they arise
- Manages inventory of cleaning supplies
- Washes dishes and assists in kitchen when needed.
- Notifies Executive Director regarding the need for any repairs related to the senior center building.
- Communicates with Program Coordinator in the execution of maintenance requests for classes and special events.
- Set up and break down chairs and/or tables in designated areas throughout the senior center for indoor and outdoor programs and activities.
- Arrange dining room tables and chairs for all events in dining room.
- Assist Program Coordinator with event decorations.
- Keep all seasonal décor organized, neat and stored properly.
- Secures and locks all windows and doors before leaving the building.
- Secures and locks outside gates before leaving.
- Cleans outside area. Sweeps outside front entrance, outdoor patio, outside back walkway and sidewalks.
- Waters and maintains all exterior flower pots.
- Performs snow removal duties; front and back walkways including sanding and salting walkways.
- To perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Executive Director
Custodian Qualifications / Skills
- Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures
- Ability to stand, walk, and bend for many hours
- Ability to perform repetitive motion for long periods of time
- Experience with using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and cleaning solutions.
- Background in handling, mixing, and using cleaning chemicals
- Knowledge of occupational hazards safety rules
- Communication skills
- Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders and work at particular heights
- Ability to set priorities, coordinate multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to solve problems independently and work well under pressure with an enthusiastic attitude.
- Ability to interact with the senior population, volunteers, and fellow staff effectively and professionally.
- Attention to detail and conscientiousness.
Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent
Basic math skills
High school courses in shop may be preferred for jobs involving repair work

Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 25 per week
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
