The purpose of this classification is to clean and maintain buildings and grounds owned and operated by the City. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: cleaning and disinfecting bathrooms; sweeping, mopping and waxing floors, sidewalks and stairwells; vacuuming and cleaning carpets; dusting and cleaning offices, furniture and equipment; and performing other duties as required. Specific duties vary according to department and/or division.

Cleans and deodorizes bathrooms located within city-owned buildings; disinfects and cleans toilets, sinks, and fixtures; mops and cleans floors and mirrors; replaces soap, toilet paper, paper towels and other supplies as needed.
Sweeps floors, sidewalks and stairwells; removes dirt and debris; mops and disinfects floors, tiles, and sidewalks; strips and removes old wax and applies new wax as needed; buffs and polishes floors; vacuums carpets in buildings; removes stains and spots caused by spills and dirt; applies deodorizers and cleaning products as needed.
Picks up trash and debris in buildings and on lawns and grounds; removes cigarette butts and other litter from areas; collects and removes recyclable paper and other items; empties trash containers and receptacles; removes and disposes of trash according to city policy.
Dusts and cleans office equipment, furniture and rooms; cleans walls, ceilings and woodwork; wipes chairs and desks to remove dirt and debris; cleans windows, blinds, doors and window sills; empties ashtrays; disposes of trash.
Performs routine and general maintenance of buildings and rooms; opens and secures buildings; cleans water fountains; maintains cigarette receptacles.
Assembles and sets up tables, chairs and other furniture and equipment for city activities, classes and other events as needed; picks up and delivers chairs and tables; supplies drinks, napkins and other items; disassembles and stores items after meeting has convened.
Washes and cleans city-owned vehicles as required by job assignment; cleans interior and exterior of vehicles; removes trash and debris from inside of car; vacuums carpets; wipes down interior walls, dash and seats; scrubs tires and wheel bases.
Assists other employees with minor repairs and maintenance as required.

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 2 months previous experience and/or training involving custodial and/or maintenance work; any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition and subtraction. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by well established procedures or sequences.
