Direct Electron, a world leader in high-performance scientific imaging systems, is seeking an experienced and skilled electronics assembly technician to join our production department and support our development group. Production responsibilities of the person filling this position include small-scale assembly of cables / harnesses (24 ~ 32 AWG crimp and solder), and small low-part-count PCBAs (SMT down to 0402 and through-hole). Responsibilities also include kitting for outsourced assembly of PCBAs, receipt and final touch-up of PCBAs, testing, and troubleshooting. Additional responsibilities include maintaining production, quality, and compliance documentation and records. Development responsibilities of the person filling the position include, managing the fabrication and assembly of prototypes, testing, and documentation for production and QC.
Job Responsibilities
- Assemble, test, troubleshoot, and document the production of company products including cable and harness assemblies using LEMO, Hirose, Molex, RF and BNC, etc. connectors. Skills required include both solder and crimp connections for wire sizes in the range 24 ~ 32 AWG.
- Assemble and test small low-part-count circuit boards. Skills include hand soldering and oven soldering both SMC and through-hole parts including components with footprints as small as 0402, working under a microscope, and cleaning for use in high-vacuum.
- Assemble component kits for contract manufacturers (CM) to assemble higher complexity PCBAs.
- Perform “touch-up work (add components, install modifications),” test, and download programming to received PCBAs.
- Create and maintain documentation for in-house and contract manufacturing of the company’s products.
- Under the direction of Manufacturing Engineering, assemble and test electromechanical assemblies such as power supplies.
- Under the direction of Development Engineering, build, and evaluate prototypes of new products.
- Under the direction of Development Engineering, build test equipment for internal use and use by contract manufacturers.
A person in this role will:
- Work under the supervision of Manufacturing Engineering to assemble and test electrical, electronic, and electromechanical subassemblies for company products.
- Work under the supervision of Development Engineering to test and evaluate new designs.
- Troubleshoot and repair printed circuit board assemblies.
Job Requirements
Education & Experience:
- A candidate with a minimum of an associate degree in electronics with 10 or more years of experience is preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
- Firm knowledge of modern high-speed analog and digital circuits with the ability to quickly read and interpret complex schematic diagrams.
- Multiple years of electronics assembly and rework experience including working with small SMT components and small size cable and harness assemblies.
- High proficiency with electronic test tools such as oscilloscopes and DVMs.
- Multiple years’ experience in electronics instrumentation assembly including handling small and delicate parts, ESD safe handling procedures, and clean room / high-vacuum procedures a plus.
- Capable of testing, troubleshooting, and repairing analog and digital circuits at the component level using surface mount components – BGA rework experience a plus.
- Fluent computer user with proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications. Schematic capture and layout skills a plus (Altium Designer).
- Self-starter with a sense of urgency capable of operating with minimal day-to-day direction.
- Comfortable working with cross-functional teams and across all levels of technical and management ladders.
