Position Summary:
Performs a variety of manual work related to cleaning and maintaining buildings according to established practices and cleaning schedules. All work is performed under the general supervision of the lead custodian and plays a vital role in providing reliable and high-quality service in support of school system objectives.
Essential Duties:
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces
- Cleans restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary
- Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures
- Dust and cleans desks and other furniture
- Assists in moving heavy objects such as furniture and equipment for meetings, workshops and a variety of other purposes
- Empties trash in classrooms, offices, hallways, and bathrooms.
- Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary
- Performs maintenance and minor repairs such as replacing light switch covers, light bulbs, ceiling tiles, fixing door handles, etc.,
- Maintains all classrooms, common areas, offices, and restrooms in clean and sanitary condition
- May be required to work athletic events or other school activities indoors or outside; work may include setup, take down, raking, cleanup, trash removal, etc.
- Performs general grounds maintenance when needed
- Maintains all custodial equipment properly and keeps equipment clean
- Uses custodial supplies and chemicals properly and efficiently
- Reports any maintenance problems to the Lead Custodian
- Follows all chemical, general safety, and fire regulations
- This position may be on-call for work after hours and on weekends as needed
- Conveys a positive image of the school system
- Regular and predictable attendance is required
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Previous custodial experience preferred
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED
- Valid Georgia driver’s license and safe driving record
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in custodial work
- Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to perform medium physical work
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
- Ability to work independently and in team environments to meet goals and deadlines

- Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare timesheets and maintenance reports using prescribed format
- Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress
