Founded in 2005, Holyoke Community Charter School (HCCS) offers a high-quality public education in grades PreK-8th. The school mission is to promote the joy of learning and to prepare children for success as students, citizens, and workers by providing them with a high-quality public education. Having recently completed a comprehensive strategic and academic plan, HCCS teachers are driven to support diverse learners through a multitude of ways to present content and assess performance. Moreover, HCCS recently completed construction of a new 22,000 sq. ft. wing, adding four new classrooms and a new 16,000 sq. ft. gymnasium. HCCS is raising the bar for what’s possible.

Positional Purpose:

The Maintenance Custodian is responsible and accountable for maintaining the building in a clean and safe condition. The Maintenance Custodian works closely with the Facilities Manager, Maintenance Supervisor and the school administrative team. The Maintenance Custodian ensures the school and SABIS® brand, systems, policies and procedures are properly and consistently implemented and observed.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Building Maintenance:

Performs repairs and maintenance of building by patching walls and doors, painting walls and trim, and replacing fixtures and partitions;
Replaces damaged ceiling and floor tiles, and repairs carpet;
Performs repairs and minor repairs to windows, doors, and hardware, roofing, and may perform routine carpentry work;
Reports to supervisor damages or needed repairs requiring outside attention;
Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and sprinkler systems;
Scrubs and cleans restroom fixtures;
Replenishes tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, kitchens, and classroom facilities;
Assists in performing routine maintenance and safety inspections of facilities;
Scrubs, dusts, sweeps, mops, vacuums, waxes and polishes floors in rooms, hallways, and common areas;
Sorts and stores material for recycling program;
Other Duties As Needed: Any other duties and tasks as deemed necessary and appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma
Previous experience in a custodial role;
Knowledge of cleaning and waxing compounds, heating and ventilating equipment, lawn mowers, irrigating systems, snow blowers, lawn and plant fertilizers and insecticides, floor buffers and custodial equipment, and basic tools utilized in building maintenance;
Considerable knowledge of maintenance and repair work;
Thorough knowledge of proper safety techniques and procedures;
High degree of professionalism.
Shift(s) available: 1pm-9pm or 3pm-11pm

While Performing Duties: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, bend, squat, knell, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see and use repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff. Employee moves about the building and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks, etc. Employees occasionally to frequently use a whiteboard, which can require grasping whiteboard pens, reaching at, below, or above shoulder height and may require trunk or neck rotation to look back. Employee may have duties involving walking on even or uneven surfaces. Employee may use computers, overhead projectors, TV, VCR, etc., which may require an approximately 10 pound force to push or pull equipment. It is necessary to grasp and manipulate pens, markers, scissors, staplers, etc. occasionally to frequently. Employee must see and hear on a continuous basis as well as speak frequently. Positions vary from standing, sitting, walking, etc. On some occasions it may be necessary to move quickly, run, etc. over smooth or uneven surfaces.
