Position Summary
HIGHLIGHTS
SUNY Geneseo is searching for an experienced and positive candidate to become our new Head Janitor. In this role, you will be responsible for effectively leading a team of 100 subordinates, including Supervising Janitors, Janitors, and Cleaners for Academics and Resident Halls.
Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Administering a program of systematic cleaning and care of assigned building areas following established guidelines
- Planning and scheduling staff assignments which can include reassigning staff to ensure work is accomplished according to schedule, staff is fully utilized, and emergency cleanings are handled
- Informing staff of policies and directives in meetings and memoranda.
- Inspecting buildings and assigned areas for compliance with cleaning guidelines and investigating complaints of unsatisfactory cleaning performance
- Preparing the annual equipment, supplies, and personnel budget for the custodial operation
- Resolving disciplinary problems and recommending retention or termination of employees
- Training staff on proper use of all equipment and supplies
- Approving time cards and requests for leave
- Providing instructions to staff for requested special cleaning services which vary from routine operations.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have permanent appointment in a Head Janitor, SG-15 classified position or be reachable for appointment on the current New York State Civil Service canvass list for SUNY Geneseo’s are location for a Head Janitor, SG-15 position, or, be transfer eligible.
New York State preferred list candidates have preference.

DEPARTMENTAL OPERATING NEEDS
- Record of dependability and past work performance, including satisfactory time and attendance record.
- Possession of computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications as assigned.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions, and read, write and communicate.
- Experience in a leadership role.
- Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.
