Summary:
The purpose of this position is to provide leadership in directing and coordinating the housekeeping department for the university. This is accomplished by developing, maintaining, and monitoring plans for the condition, quality, and appearance of assigned university facilities and equipment; directing the performance of the department employees and ensuring great service is delivered to all stakeholders on campus.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Operations
- Ensure that all University facilities are maintained in a manner which provides a clean and safe environment by developing departmental procedures and guidelines which address these objectives.
- Direct the priorities for work assignments, regular and special duties, supervise the activities of assigned staff directly, develop appropriate contingency plans for emergency situations, and inspect the quality of work performed for assigned staff and facilities.
- Ensure that services of the department meet the guidelines established by the Vice President of Campus Operations by developing long range plans for the purchase and replacement of equipment, staff training, staffing needs, and required contract services.
- Advise the Vice President of Campus Operations regarding the general condition and cleanliness of university facilities by conducting regular inspections, reviewing condition reports and submitting appropriate reports and documents to the Vice President of Campus Operations.
- Reduce the likelihood of injury or unsafe practices by housekeeping employees by informing personnel of safety information regarding supplies and equipment, making that information available to all employees through posting on bulletin boards, and maintaining a file of all publications and bulletins regarding safety information.
- Where applicable, ensure that contract services meet specified results by inspecting the work performed and directing corrective action to be taken as necessary.
- Manage funds by assisting the Vice President of Campus Operations in the preparation of the annual operating budget for assigned departments and monitoring operating budget expenditures throughout the year.
- Manage and supervise projects by visiting project sites; attend meetings; process and file forms; handle problem areas related to daily department operation; report progress on daily activities and projects.
- Conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance to all federal, state, and local laws, codes and ordinances.
- Ensure the department operates efficiently and in a productive manner.
- Uphold the highest standards of cleanliness and conditions and inspect the campus daily to identify any area that must be address.
- Create, foster and develop a culture of service toward students, faculty and staff.
- Identify recurring challenges and format an action agenda to eliminate or mitigate them.
- Ensure appropriate deep cleaning, preventive maintenance and special coverage is taken care of for all special events on campus.
Personnel
- Develop an effective staff by hiring qualified applicants, training employees to standards, supervising the performance of departmental tasks, evaluating employee performance, and directing corrective measures to be taken when necessary.
- Provide essential personnel management services by maintaining appropriate supervisory records, handling or referring employee grievances as appropriate, remaining knowledgeable of and enforcing the University Personnel Policy, reviewing and approving employee requests for vacation, sick leave, and other excused periods away from work, and completing employee performance evaluation reports.
- Assure compliance with University rules and policies regarding employee conduct by advising housekeeping personnel of the University's rules and policies on employee conduct, collaborating with Employee Services to provide positive and progressive corrective action,, and recommending termination of employment to the Vice President of Campus Operations as necessary.
- Ensure that personnel have the equipment and supplies necessary to perform services by reviewing requests from supervisors for supplies and equipment, requisitioning for replacement items as necessary, and directing the storage of supplies and equipment in a secure space.
- Manage Department payroll, distribute time/payroll forms to staff, process all time records; and manage contract labor payroll procedures.
- Provide direct supervision to the Assistant Director of Housekeeping, Housekeeping Supervisors and Housekeepers.
Administrative
- Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required.
- Manage daily administrative and operational business associated with the department; prepare draft plans, proposals, policies and procedures for housekeeping operations for review and approval by the Vice President of Campus Operations.
- Respond to various telephone calls; process incoming and outgoing e-mails; file e-mails in either paper or electronic format.
- Implement deep cleaning and maintenance program for assigned university facilities; inspect campus facilities; monitor program effectiveness and efficiency; and recommend modification of the program to the Vice President of Campus Operations.
- Maintain close professional working relationship with Campus Operations team and management to ensure coordination of university wide activities that have carry-over implications from one department to another.
- Serve as chair and/or member of various campus advisory committees.
- Contribute to the overall success of the department by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- This position is designated as a first responder and must be present on campus during declared emergencies.
- The Director of Housekeeping must work a schedule that reflects the need of the department they supervise. Hours of operations fall outside of the standard Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm position. Frequent weekend and night work is required of the position.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have 5-10 years of relevant professional experience in a campus operation setting.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
