POSITION TITLE: Janitor
PAY RANGE/GRADE: Commensurate with experience/Grade 3
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Janitor works out of their assigned building(s) and keeps the apartment building, as well as the surrounding areas, clean, safe and in good condition at all times. In all instances, the Janitor must perform in accordance with and be committed to the Bickerdike mission, including compliance with all Bickerdike policies and procedures.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb stairs, use hands, reach with hands and arms, bend, lift and or move up to 75 pounds.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine duties including, but not limited to: Emptying trash cans on a daily basis; ensuring that dumpster areas are clean and free of debris; vacuum, mop, clean and/or sweep areas as assigned and dispose of trash in hallways, stairways, lobby areas and wherever necessary and ensure that all public areas are properly heated and lit; perform any other preventative maintenance on or around the building, as well as direct utility/delivery persons where to go, if applicable.
- Maintain grounds outside of buildings clean and free of trash as well as shovel snow as necessary
- Perform common area maintenance and upkeep in and around buildings.
- Perform minor repair work and painting as needed. Report minor or major repairs to the Maintenance Clerk, Property Manager and/or other supervisors as appropriate.
- Prepare vacant units for rent up, as assigned.
- Ensure a safe working environment and practices which reflect safety as a priority.
- Prepare buildings for inspections by outside agencies with working closely with Maintenance staff, as assigned.
- Assist the Maintenance Coordinator in maintaining janitorial supply inventory.
- Maintain machines and other relevant equipment in working condition.
- Be reachable by Bickerdike company phone at all times, and be available and respond to any emergency situations or emergency calls after regular office hours as required.
- Perform other relevant tasks/duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of 2 years of related experience. High school diploma or equivalent required. Must have basic math skills and be able to operate all relevant tools and equipment. Must have good communication (written & oral) skills. Must be able to work with persons of various ethnic and economic backgrounds and willing to work flexible hours and be on-call. Must have access to a car, valid driver’s license and proof of insurance for work in the field. West Town, Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Hermosa and Avondale residents preferred.
REPORTING RELATIONS: Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Manager. In the absence of this supervisor, shall report to the Maintenance Coordinator.
