Organizational Overview: Food Forward Inc. fights hunger and prevents food waste by rescuing fresh surplus produce, connecting this abundance with people experiencing food insecurity, and inspiring others to do the same. Fruits and vegetables are collected from backyards, orchards, farmers markets, and wholesalers and distributors. This recovered produce is provided free of charge to hunger relief organizations that serve community members in various ways, including food banks, agencies serving unhoused people, domestic violence shelters, transitional youth homes, veteran services, family resource centers, LGBTQ+ teen/adult/senior services, college student assistance programs, programs serving people with disabilities, and many more. Since Food Forward’s inception, our staff and thousands of dedicated volunteers have rescued hundreds of millions of pounds of fruits and vegetables. Position Overview: Food Forward seeks a hardworking and self-motivated custodian who is passionate about making spaces clean, safe, and conducive to efficient operations. The Custodian will be responsible for upkeep and general maintenance of Food Forward’s Pit Stop, a produce warehouse and office space of about 30,000 sqft. The Custodian will report to the WRP Warehouse Manager and work closely with Food Forward’s Operations Manager and other warehouse staff members to keep operations running smoothly. The ideal candidate will view their work through a safety and efficiency lens and speak up when there are issues or improvements to be made. This new position at Food Forward will require flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing needs and situations. This position will also be expected to help with special events and other projects or work at our two different warehouse locations. Above all, this position will have a safety-first mindset and be a strong team player by helping us prevent injuries and thinking about creating safe, efficient working environments across the Organization.
Core Responsibilities:
- Sweep, Scrub, Mob, and Vacuum floors.
- Maintain walk-in coolers on a monthly and quarterly basis.
- Cleaning and preventative maintenance
- Floor drain maintenance, clean and free from clogs
- Collect/Empty Trash cans
- Dusting all surfaces (walls, furniture, and equipment)
- Cleaning, organizing, and restocking offices, restrooms, and dining areas
- Follow cleaning procedures
- Follows procedures for the use and storage of chemical cleaners and power machinery to prevent damage to floors and fixtures
- Perform routine maintenance activities inside and out.
- Notifies managers/supervisors regarding the need for repairs or additions to building operating systems
- Follow proper disposal requirements for hazardous waste items.
- Upkeep and perform safety checks following the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan.
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors.
- Ad hoc research
- Any other duties as needed and assigned by the managers/supervisors
Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:
- Bilingual, Spanish and English
- Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures
- Experience with using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and cleaning solutions
- Knowledge of occupational hazards safety rules (OSHA)
- Communication skills
- Computer skills - Google and Microsoft Suites, Internet, etc…
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to repeatedly lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, bend, lift, twist, kneel, crouch, crawl, pull, push, carry, grasp, reach, and stoop as needed.
- Ability to perform repetitive motion for long periods
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors
