SUMMARY
The custodian is responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of custodial tasks that provides the public areas with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to work and conduct parish activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. The omission of specific statements of the duties or functions does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Occasionally evenings with advanced notice and a minimum of one (1) weekend day.
- Cleans interior areas including, but not limited to, the church, sacred spaces, offices, hallways, lavatories, drinking fountains, breakrooms, entrances, and other area as directed.
- Cleans building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming. Performs physically demanding tasks requiring use of heavy custodial equipment, including, but not limited to, mopping, stripping, waxing, and floor buffing.
- Cleans, sanitizes, and resupplies restrooms.
- Performs custodial tasks, including, but not limited to, emptying, cleaning, and sanitizing waste receptacles; dusting furniture and other various fixtures; cleaning vents, fans, and walls.
- Cleans interior and exterior of windows, glass partitions, or mirrors, using approved cleaners, sponges, and/or squeegees.
- Check outside buildings for litter and pick up as appropriate including sidewalks and walkways surrounding the buildings.
- Performs cleaning and sanitizing tasks in various facility areas including kitchen and food service areas.
- Removes trash by emptying trash containers; transports materials to disposal area; recycles materials.
- May perform residential cleaning and sanitizing services of church properties, including, but not limited to, living areas, bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.
- Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and established regulations to ensure personal, parishioner, visitor, and staff safety.
- Reports and removes possible safety hazards.
- Responds to emergency situations in order to confine, resolve, and prevent injuries or other hazardous conditions.
- Requisitions supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
- Moves heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies, either manually with assistance or by using appropriate equipment including, but not limited to, hand trucks.
- Sets up, arranges, or removes decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, or scaffolding to prepare facilities for events, such as banquets and / or meetings.
- Assists with preparation and service of coffee and refreshments for assigned functions; follows up with cleaning.
- Maintains “customer” confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
- Performs light maintenance as directed.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Other tasks and duties, as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or equivalent preferred supplemented by any previous experience demonstrating ability to safely and effectively operate standard facility custodial equipment, and ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
The ability to communicate, listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing. Strong command of both written and spoken English language.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The working hours of this position are not limited to an 8-hour day. This person will need to be available in the evening and weekends, as needed. Must be willing to work in conditions of stress and function well under pressure.
PHYSICAL and SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing 15 feet and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (30 pounds).
