Job Summary
This position will provide routine manual work involving cleaning and housekeeping duties in University buildings, dormitories and food service units. Responsibilities include janitorial and housekeeping duties in accordance with established work routines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs a combination, but not necessarily all, of the following duties:
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors
- Vacuums and cleans rugs
- Dusts and waxes furniture
- Scrubs, cleans and polishes lavatories, fixtures and mirrors
- Replenishes lavatory supplies
- Changes bed linens
- Carries out and disposes of garbage and trash
- Washes and dries dishes and cooking utensils
- Cleans tables of soiled dishes
Assures energy conservation by ensuring all non-necessary lights are turned off (classrooms, offices, etc.).
Makes an identification of all problems requiring a work order for correction, such as (light bulb replacement, lock adjustment, carpet repair, broken glass, holes in walls, ceiling tile replacement, tripping hazards, termites, etc.)
The Custodians should be identifying obvious facility deficiencies that are observed during their duties
Performs related duties as required
May work in all weather conditions.
May work around chemicals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to effectively execute oral and written instruction.
- Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed.
- Ability to accurately perform all phases of duties assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of cleaning and janitorial methods and materials.
- Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor.
- Knowledge of, and the ability to use, janitorial equipment and supplies.
- Proficient in the use, care and maintenance of basic janitorial equipment including buckets, mops, automatic floor scrubbers, floor buffers, shop vacuums, and upright vacuum cleaners.
Working Conditions
- May work in all weather conditions.
- May work around chemicals.
