Description
Moves equipment, furniture, and supplies across campus and performs routine custodial work to maintain cleanliness of assigned area or building(s). Work involves driving a moving truck, loading/unloading cargo, packing items, preventing damage while moving, disassembling and assembling back furniture, using lifting machinery and handling customer complaints plus keeping accurate records of moves noting date, time and hours of work performed. Delivering materials to various campus buildings as part of interdepartmental office moves. Performs cleaning and caring for buildings and surrounding premises; maintaining custodial tools and equipment; requesting supplies and delivering supplies to all buildings on campus; performing minor building and equipment repairs and other related duties. Works under moderate supervision. Instructions are received in oral or written form, work orders, and work is periodically inspected by a supervisor for conformance with established standards of building care and maintenance. Reports directly to a custodial foreperson under the general supervision of the Manager, Custodial & Residence Life Maintenance.
Examples
Performs moving tasks such as loading moving truck with equipment, furniture, and supplies and delivering and unloading cargo for end-user in a specified location. May involve disassembly and reassembly of furniture and equipment to simplify transport. Performs custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, operating a buffer, spray waxing, and dry and wet stripping. Performs rest room maintenance and cleaning, replenishing supplies and applying cleaning chemicals. Performs carpet maintenance, cleans office furniture, walls, and windows, and empties trash. May be assigned to facilitate set-up and take-down for special events. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Condition
Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds on a regular basis. Significant physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing 100 pounds is required. Ability to stand for long periods of time, to climb stairs and ladders, to stoop, bend, use moving dollies, and reach overhead. Sufficient strength, stamina, and mobility to perform a variety of manual tasks associated with duties. Must be able to work with and around cleaning products and chemicals.
Experience
Should have experience in moving techniques, and janitorial or general cleaning work.
Knowledge
Must have good knowledge of safe practices in lifting and moving heavy furniture and equipment. Must know the modern methods of cleaning rest rooms. Requires a working knowledge of cleaning supplies and custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners; buffers, wet and dry pick-ups; have some knowledge of carpet maintenance and care; and must have knowledge of custodial chemicals and their application. Knowledge of forklift and pallet jack operation is beneficial.
Education
Requires education sufficient to receive and follow oral and written directives, as well as follow instructions in the mixing and use of chemicals and the operation of power equipment.
Additional Requirements
Ability to work unsupervised. Must be able to understand hazardous materials handling and be able to maintain cleaning supplies inventory. *Requires employment physical exam. *A valid Texas driver's license is preferred.
