This is a hybrid role that combines both security and bookseller responsibilities. Ideal candidates will possess a combination of strong people skills and well-developed conflict resolution skills. This position is primarily a Security Specialist and secondarily a bookseller. This position will perform bookseller duties as outlined below when not engaged in security-related duties.
- Help create a positive shopping experience and a safe work environment by providing a visible presence in public areas to promote positive interactions and minimize problematic behaviors.
- Monitor the retail floors and respond appropriately to environmental cues by:
- Conducting both regular and random walkthroughs throughout the retail store
- Watching for irregular or unusual behaviors and conditions that may lead to security or safety concerns
- Enforcing community rules of conduct in a calm and professional manner
- Responding to incidents and critical situations in a calm, problem-solving manner
- Help prevent loss by learning:
- Common shoplifting techniques and methods
- How to identify suspicious behavior
- Which merchandise is frequently targeted for theft
- How to intervene in suspected shoplifting based on store protocols
- Follow store protocols for dealing with conflicts, problematic behaviors, and shoplifting
- Accurately and thoroughly document any incidents of suspected or confirmed theft, including detailed descriptions of individuals involved, items taken, and the time and location of the incident.
- Collaborate with management and law enforcement as needed.
- Keep in mind at all times that this is a hands-off position. No one, without exception, may be touched, detained, or followed outside the premises unless necessary to prevent injury or loss of life.
The Security Specialist component of this role is ideal for people who are comfortable interacting with diverse sectors of the community, able to function effectively in stressful situations, and are skillful at conflict de-escalation and resolution. Required skills and abilities include:

- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be interested in creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming store environment
- Must have the experience and willingness needed to diffuse and deescalate conflict situations
- Must have demonstrable problem solving skills
- Must exhibit a confident, calm and competent demeanor in interactions with others
- Must have at least one year of work experience in a retail, customer service, or related environment.
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit for as long as needed to successfully fulfill tasks

Booksellers are the heart of our bookstores. Under the direction of the Book Store Manager and Retail Managers, Booksellers sell books and other merchandise to customers while providing exceptional customer service that keeps customers coming back to our stores. In addition, Booksellers perform a variety of tasks needed for the effective and profitable operation of the bookstore.
- Serve customers in person or by phone by providing assistance in finding books and merchandise, researching book requests, making book recommendations, placing orders, and preparing books for customer pick-up or shipping.
- Consistently deliver a unique customer experience by providing exceptional customer service.
- Process sales transactions using POS system.
- Shelve and straighten books.
- Perform general section maintenance and cleaning.
- Other duties as assigned by the Store Manager or Retail Managers.

- Computer Skills:

- Ability to learn to use company computer systems and tools effectively within a reasonable time period, including iMerchant and Webstore

- Being well-read in one or more book genres is desirable.
- At least one year of retail or customer service experience is preferred.

Salary
$19.29/hour. This is an hourly non-exempt position.
